This is a super simple method for the provisional cast on.
You will need: 2 circular needles and yarnNeedle #1 = the main needle, used for continuing to knitNeedle #2 = stitch holder for the provisional stitches (use a smaller needle size for a neater stitch appearance)
Begin with a knot on needle #2.
Hold both needles together, needle #1 on top.Wrap the yarn around both needles (from bottom to top, over the needles and back down to the bottom)...
...until the desired number of stitches is reached.
When the required number of stitches is reached, push the yarn against the needle and turn the needles in the direction of knitting.

When the required number of stitches has been reached, push the thread against the needle and turn the needles to the working side.
Pull needle #2 through so that it hangs loosely, without letting go of the thread. Ready to start knitting.
Knit the required number of stitches, leaving the knot on needle #2. It will only be undone when the provisional stitches are knitted. The first row is done!
